Publications
The following are professional publications that have included writing and images of my personal projects from teaching high school art, to being a consciences community member working on our local news letter
Unboxed - Issue 21 Fall 2021 |
Jean-Michel Basquiat
My class project was to recreate a painting by the 1980's expressionist painter, Basquiat. The busy, fragmented nature of the painting lends itself to a group project because every square inch has compelling subject matter that is loose and quirky. 90 high school seniors recreated a small portion of the painting to create a large-scale unified reproduction. In spring 2008, the High Tech High GSE published the first issue of Unboxed, its journal of adult learning in schools. From the beginning, our goal was to spread good ideas that can improve schools. The project cards were the first step—to make it easy to hand an idea from one teacher to another, we designed a journal with some of the content already freed from the book’s binding. Unboxed has grown into a media platform that produces podcasts, videos, interviews, card decks, curricular resources, and will continue to publish a semesterly journal with project cards. |
Unboxed - Issue 23 Fall 2022 |
Pop-Art
To familiarize my class with the genre of Pop Art, we created cut-out paintings of ordinary, popular culture icons. Simple products are elevated to the stature of "Art" and exemplify the ideals of the Pop Art movement of Andy Warhol and the 1960's. Unboxed - Issue 25 Fall 2023 |
Cubism and the Human Body
Each student was tasked to paint any part of the human body, either inside or out. This is a deconstruction of the human form, reconfigured to become an surreal portrait of a complete human. The fractured, broken parts speak to the ideals of Picasso and the Cubist movement of the early 1900's. Changing the Subject - 2021 |
Two of my high school art projects are highlighted in this book that is about how to make learning an engaging experience.
Changing The Subject - A cross between an art book and a how-to-manual, this beautifully designed volume features some of the most creative and inspiring student projects from the award-winning High Tech High schools in San Diego, California. With contributions from over fifty teachers, spanning grades K through high school, Changing the Subject is filled with images of student work and students working together. From rocketry to video production, astronomy to ants, the projects detailed in Changing the Subject are cross-curricular, student-centered, and engaging. Together they form a picture of how school can be meaningful, fun, and rigorous at the same time. Each project includes the teacher’s inspiration, how the project was launched, learning goals, scaffolding and differentiation, as well as how the students’ work was assessed and exhibited. |
The Rolando Village Oracle - Summer 2025 |
About the article My choice to write about coexisting with indigenous animals was in hope to provide information on how we can survive peacefully with the critters that inhabit the environment around us. Most of the information was gleaned from the Humane Society web site where one can find much interesting information on the subject of how to live along side wild animals. I also created an illustration of the various village critters we deal with on a regular basis. |
Mixed Messages |
About the Book This collection contains artwork that Jeremy Farson created between 1989 and 2010. It is a survey of work that depicts a range of art, from corporate commissions and murals, to art that explores personal interests and aesthetics. This book includes a selection of some of Jeremy's favorite pieces throughout those two decades of making art. Mixed Messages is a title that might convey the variety of styles and images that is expressed in Jeremy's work. |
Cool Grey Summer |
About the book This is a collection of images that describe, the summer of 2010, through the eyes and spirit of, Jeremy Farson. It is close to chronological but deviates on instinct. Though some images are pre or post the actual summer season, they play an influence to the larger picture of the summer experience. This collection represents the captured moments during the summer of 2010. Many other summer thoughts and experiences have come and gone un-captured...., November 2010 |
Sammy Searches for Surf |
About the Book
This book is the result of a junior high school art project that was assigned by my teacher, Mr. Guentner, who taught at Muirlands, in La Jolla, California. It was either in the 7th, 8th or 9th grade that I wrote and drew the images for this story, based around the character, Sammy. The character of, Sammy, was inspired by a cartoon my older brother, Joel Farson, used to draw on his high school notebooks. I imitated this character, named him Sammy and developed him into the protagonist of my story depicting a 1970's era surfer dude who went on an adventure in search for good, uncrowded surf. The original book is now watermarked and deteriorating. I used my Photoshop skills to clean up and rejuvenate the images. Ironically, I am now a high school art teacher who assigns like projects for my current art students at High Tech High International in San Diego, California. This book is dedicated to my dear, late grandmother, Jerry Halleman, who urged me to do something with this little story that she loved so much. |
June Gloom: Dark Corners and Diverticulitis |
About the Book
“Diverticulosis happens when pouches, “diverticula”, form in the wall of the colon. If these pouches get inflamed or infected, it is called diverticulitis. Diverticulitis can be very painful.” – WebMD On May 22, I awoke to serious abdominal pain. This book is an illustrated account of the ensuing six weeks. I was diagnosed with Diverticulitis. My life suddenly lay in the hands of the medical system. The month of June was full of eye opening experiences in health and illness. A fistula is a hole, I had one in my colon and it abscessed into the surrounding fatty tissue to form a large pocket of infected bacterial funk. This raised my condition to a complex status. Surgery was a must, yet I had to get relatively healthy before going under the knife. My diet was restricted from either; no food, to only clear liquids to low fiber foods. I lost 30 pounds in six weeks. I sweat through shirts and sheets every night. For two weeks I had to wear a drainage bag that was attached by a tube which entered my stomach. In addition I wore a portable IV backpack that pumped antibiotics into a PICC line that was thread through a vein extending from my elbow to my heart. I was physically encumbered, and mentally anguished. I was consumed by medical concerns and worst case scenarios. I was in pain and afraid. My friend Jeff gave me a sketch book during my first stint in the hospital. I drew a lot. For six weeks before surgery, I traveled to the dark corners of my mind. This illustrated book is a cathartic release and a way to put that dreadful period of growth behind me. |
